Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ

What can I expect in my first therapy session?

We will begin by assessing your needs and desired outcome. I will ask several history, background, and symptom-related questions to get to know you better. Additionally, we will start to determine the best direction for our work together.

What is the therapy process?

Once goals are established, you will be asked to track, write down, journal or reflect on your distress. During the therapy sessions, we will discuss and further explore your experiences. I will also provide you with tangible coping strategies, resources or skills when useful.

What trauma therapy is best for me?

There are several different types of therapy modalities psychologists use to help patients with trauma. Common ones include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) and, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), among many others. Determining which one is right for you will depend on your needs and desired therapeutic outcome. There is not a one size fits all approach to trauma work.

What are the benefits of EMDR?

EMDR is a therapy approach I often use with patients. EMDR is particular good at helping people reduce experiences of hypervigilance, avoidance, intrusive thoughts or memories and regulating emotional distress. Additionally, EMDR works relatively quickly compared to many other therapy modalities.

What is a therapy intensive?

A therapy intensive is a focused approach to deeper therapeutic work. It is an extended psychotherapy experience designed to give you more time and space to work on specific therapeutic goals. Instead of meeting for a 45- or 60-minute session each week, an intensive involves several hours of therapy condensed into one or more days. This can provide momentum and create opportunity for deeper work and meaningful change. I offer intensives for trauma, grief and anxiety/stress. Learn more about intensives.

How do I know if an intensive is right for me?

Ask yourself the following:
Do you feel stuck or at a plateau in traditional therapy?
Have you ever left a therapy session and wished you had more time?
Do you have difficulty scheduling consistent weekly appointments?
Are you ready for a different approach to therapy?
Do you want a more concentrated approach to therapy?
Are you ready for the deeper emotional work?

Good Faith Estimate
Under the No Surprise Act, healthcare providers are required to give a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of costs for services. This is to prevent surprise billing. If you have questions about costs, please do not hesitate to ask.
Do you take Insurance?
I am considered an out of network provider which means I am not contracted with insurance companies. However, many people find they have out of network coverage or use HSA/FSA funds to pay for services. I have chosen to be out of network at this time as insurance companies are often difficult to work with, dictate patient care,  determine what is "medically necessary" treatment, and denying coverage. Additionally, clinical services like intensives, couple's counseling and programs are often not covered by insurance anyway. In addition, I have found insurance companies will frequently ask for patient medical records which compromises the privacy of your private medical information.

For those that would like to submit for out of network coverage, I do work with a company called Thrizer which will help you get reimbursed for services. Instantly check your out of pocket costs using the form below.

What is the Stress Less Program?

The Stress Less Program is for people who feel stressed and burnt out. It is not therapy and not intended to treat a medical condition or diagnosis. It is meant for those who may or may not have experienced therapy in the past, but need some additional support right now managing daily stress. You can learn more about Stress Less here.

What can I expect when starting therapy?

The first step in the therapy process with me is an initial consultation. This appointment costs $50 and is charged at the time of service. In this session, we will discuss your needs and how I can help you. Next, I will complete an assessment. From there, we will determine the best path forward for you and create an individualized treatment plan.

Where should I start?

If you are considering therapy or an intensive, start by scheduling an initial consultation appointment. If you are interested in the Stress Less Program, you are welcome to purchase it at anytime.
